Claude vs. TotalRecalls
Claude is where a lot of long-form thinking happens — drafts, code reviews, research that spans days. There are two ways to get that work out of the browser, and they’re built for different jobs.
What Claude’s official export gives you
Anthropic provides a full account export to individual users on the Free, Pro and Max plans. In the web app or Claude Desktop, open Settings → Privacy and click Export data. When the export is ready, a download link arrives by email; it expires 24 hours after delivery and you must be signed in to use it. On Team and Enterprise plans only the organisation’s Primary Owner can run an export, and it is not available from the iOS or Android apps.
The result is one JSON archive covering your account and your conversation history, Projects included. It is the right choice for a complete, compliance-grade record. It is not shaped like something you’ll browse on a Tuesday.
Why Claude history is easy to lose
Long Projects and conversations are hard to re-find months later. UI changes and workspace switches break muscle memory. And copy-paste doesn’t scale past a few conversations — you lose the order, the formatting, and the context that made the thread worth keeping.
What TotalRecalls does for Claude
On Windows, TotalRecalls connects using your local Claude session and downloads conversations into a provider folder as Markdown + JSON, one pair per chat. Long conversations and Project conversations save as files you can reread without scrolling, so your drafts, plans and code reviews sit in one folder sorted by date.
| Claude official export | TotalRecalls | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Entire account | The conversations you choose |
| Delivery | Emailed link, expires in 24 hours | Written to disk immediately |
| Format | One JSON archive | Markdown + JSON, one pair per chat |
| Readable as-is | Needs parsing first | Any text editor |
| Repeat it cheaply | Request and wait, each time | Rerun whenever you like |
| Available on mobile | No — web or desktop only | App runs on Windows |
| Works with your other AI tools | No | Same library, all 8 providers |
Which should you use?
Use Claude’s official export when you need a complete account archive for compliance or a full record. Use TotalRecalls when you want a library you’ll actually reopen — especially if you also use ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Grok and want one archive location instead of five. They aren’t mutually exclusive: a periodic official export plus a browsable local library covers both needs.
Privacy note
TotalRecalls is built so login stays on your machine. There is deliberately no hosted “send us your Claude cookies” service — that’s the design, not a limitation.
Good practices
- Download after major writing projects, not only when you feel panic
- Name your disk folder clearly, e.g.
AI-Archive/Claude - If you use multiple AI tools, keep sibling folders per provider
- Keep the official export too if you need a compliance-grade record — the two serve different purposes
FAQ
- Can TotalRecalls back up Claude Projects, or only single chats?
- Long Project conversations and single chats both save as files — the same path, sorted by date.
- Claude already lets me export my data. Why use TotalRecalls?
- Claude's export is a whole-account archive delivered by email, and the download link expires after 24 hours. TotalRecalls writes one readable Markdown + JSON file per conversation into a folder you browse, immediately and as often as you like.
- Does my Claude session leave my computer?
- No. You complete a local sign-in on your own machine; TotalRecalls doesn't host your credentials or your conversations.
- What format are the files in?
- Markdown for reading and JSON for structure — one pair per conversation.
